We screw down decks and subflooringBy:tmenees
23-May-2009I bought a Quick Drive tool last spring because I got a contract to add decks to a lot of houses in two large developments. The contractors wanted them screwed down. At the start it was just me and one helper and we wouldn't have been able to keep up without the Quick Drive. The funny thing was that when I used the tool it worked fine but my helper couldn't make it work right. Half his screws weren't all the way down and he wore out bits fast as we put them in. I put up with him for a while because it meant I worked the Quik Drive and it was the easiest part of the job.
I have a full crew now and we are framing but still doing some decks. We use the Quick Drive tool for our subfloors and it's a big help there. We get more for a screwed down floor and can do it as fast as nailing. Everybody on the crew uses it too. That first helper is long gone. Driving screws was just one of a lot of things he couldn't do right. I mean like cutting square and driving nails.
One truly great driverBy:bruce
23-May-2009I purchased the Quikdrive system for deck work, not so much for the speed but to keep off my knees. I was truly impressed with how easy it was to attach the extension and use. I drove an entire 12' X 20' deck with TREX decking in less than 80 minutes, that's 940 screws, including the time it took to keep the 1/8" spacing. Previously it took 5-6 hours. It never jammed, but did have 4 screws bend over when driving them, quickly fixed by straightening and driving them in with a cordless driver. I would highly recommend this driver, the time saved compensates for the higher cost of the screws.
>1800 screws later and my back is NOT sore!By:J.D.
23-May-2009A friend of mine asked me to help him install some sub-flooring in his new house. So I thought this would be an opportune time to try this thing out. WHAT A GREAT TOOL!! Set-up was easy and operation was a "no-brainer". Not only was it easy to operate, but what a TIME SAVER! Simply snap in a strip of screws, and you are ready for business. As fast as you can depress the nose piece, is as fast as you can put in a screw. Heck, at one point, we had his 13 yr. old son running running this thing while we layed the flooring. We drove >1800, 1 1/4" X 8, square drive screws with EASE!
The only caveats that I have about this tool are that the nose pieces are difficult to change without the aid of some dry lubricant (as recommended by the manufacturer). However, this is because the tool is machined to very tight tolerances. The second, and last, "draw-back" is that sometimes it would not drive the last screw in the strip. In my opinion, these are very small concessions to make to reap the tremendous benefits of this tool.
